Presentation to Council on proposed traffic calming - 3900 block of Oliver Street

end

Summary Background:

In November, the City received a petition for traffic calming devices for the 3900 block of Oliver Street. The petition was validated by the City Clerk’s office to meet the required 60% signature threshold. Council scheduled a public hearing in March. The intent of the public hearing is to provide residents an opportunity to share comments in the support or opposition of traffic calming measures.

City staff is conducting a traffic study of the location to determine if traffic calming device(s) are in the interests of best traffic engineering practices and public safety. Initial feedback will be shared with the community at the public hearing on March 1, 2021.

Next Steps:

Staff will complete the evaluation and provide Council with a coordinated recommendation from Police and the Department of Public Works (DPW) on March 15, 2021. Evaluation, design, and construction of any recommended traffic calming may take six (6) months to several years, depending on the scope and cost of street improvements and traffic mitigation.

Per City Code, the Mayor and Council will announce their decision to approve, approve with modifications, or deny the requested traffic calming devices within 15 days of the close of the hearing unless, due to extraordinary circumstances, the time limit is extended by a majority vote of the City Council. In accordance with this provision, the Council is scheduled to take action on these petitions on March 15, 2021.
