Suggested Action:

recommendation

I move the City Council authorize the Mayor to send correspondence to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission requesting the Commission address urban farming, deforestation, public safety, and pet waste along the Northwest Branch Trail.

end

Summary Background:

Recently, there has been an increasing concern around activities occurring along the Northwest Branch Trail. One issue is the increase in urban farming, which has led to deforestation affecting the ecological balance in the area. Additionally, crime data has shown a rise in incidents along the trail including vandalism, theft, and assault. Lastly, there has been a rise in reports of the parasite Giardia, which is a result of dog feces left on the trail.

In order to address these issues, the letter will request M-NCPPC take the following steps:

1. Implement stricter regulations and enforcement measures to prevent unauthorized urban farming along the trail.
2. Increase security measures, including the installation of adequate lighting, surveillance cameras, and regular patrolling to ensure the safety of trail users.
3. Restore the deforested areas by replanting native vegetation and trees to rehabilitate the ecological balance and natural beauty of the trail.
4. Install additional pet waste stations along the trail to reduce the spread of Giardia and promote a cleaner, healthier environment.
5. Enact measures to reduce the number of motorized vehicles on the trail.
6. Enact measures to reduce the number of unleashed dogs on the trail.
