Summary Background:
In 2017, the City of Hyattsville obtained funding from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Resiliency Grant Program to address flooding within Lower Ward 1. This includes the area surrounding Hyattsville’s Department of Public Works facility, the CSX railroad, and some older neighborhood communities with dead end streets. It is situated near the confluence of the Northeast and Northwest branches of the Anacostia River. Existing grey stormwater infrastructure is limited, and localized flooding is common after storm events. This study was presented and adopted by Council in late 2019.
In 2020 the City received funding from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to construct the first project. This project is a submerged gravel wetland at the intersection of Charles Armentrout Drive and 42nd Place. This project is currently in progress and is expected to be completed in April 2023.
In 2022 the City was informed that it would receive federal funding to complete the design of 8 more projects. These project designs will be completed utilizing existing on-call engineering and design contracts, and LIDC will be coordinating with the various consultants.
