Summary Background:
In December 2022, the City Council passed Ordinance 2022-05, an ordinance amending Chapter 52 of the City of Hyattsville Code to update and clarify the animal welfare provisions contained therein. In keeping with the provisions of this Ordinance, the City hired a part-time Animal Control Liaison (ACL), whose responsibility it is to collaborate with various city departments, including but not limited to Code compliance, HPD, and PG County agencies responsible for animal control incidents that occur within the City’s municipal boundaries. The ACL has general knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and county procedures and serves as the City's POC to assist residents with obtaining information and follow-up when additional support is needed from the responsible agencies. The ACL collaborated with these city departments and County agencies to develop a Standard Response Protocol to advise appropriate response by the City to animal control issues.
In addition, the ACL is responsible for collecting and maintaining data on animal incidents in the City and preparing quarterly and annual reports that are available to the public via the City’s Communications channels.
