Summary Background:
HB182/SB118 will implement graduated fines for ATE speed cameras and will be introduced in the General Assembly in 2025.
The bills update existing laws that allow local governments in Prince George's County to install speed cameras on streets in a residential district with a speed limit up to 35 mph, school zones with a speed limit no lower than 20 mph, on MD 210 (Indian Head Hwy), and on (or under certain circumstances within 1/2 mile of) the grounds of institutions of higher education.
The bill would change the current fines for speeding violations captured by ATE from up to $40 to:
• Up to $40 for driving 12-15 mph over the speed limit;
• Up to $55 for driving 16-19 mph over the speed limit;
• Up to $95 for driving 20-29 mph over the speed limit;
• Up to $180 for driving 30-39 mph over the speed limit; and
• Up to $350 for driving 40 mph+ over the speed limit.
