Summary Background:
Cities across the state and country have seen increases in violent crimes, carjacking, burglaries, and weapon seizures. The Police Department is pursuing technological advancements to aid investigators in the arrest of suspects and the prevention of these crimes. This purchase would include 10 fixed LPR cameras that would be located strategically on roads providing egress and ingress to the City. Unlike other LPR camera systems, this system records the vehicle make, model, color, registration state and numbers. In cases where investigators have limited vehicle information, this system could be utilized to quickly identify registration information and disseminate that information to officers in Hyattsville and across jurisdictional boundaries increasing the likelihood of arrest and case closure. The total cost for this system is $12,000 per year ($1,200 per unit with a minimum of 10 units) and covers the lease of the hardware, installation, maintenance, upgrades, and storage.
Next Steps:
Council approval.
Fiscal Impact:
$12,000 per year
City Administrator Comments:
This lease option provides the best value. It will be an invaluable tool to assist investigators as they work to resolve serious incidents and crime. The staff will brief the council on recommended locations prior to installation.
