FY25 Council Budget Amendment: Pet Waste Stations
end
Suggested Action:
recommendation
For discussion: I move the Mayor and Council include $3,000 in the FY25 budget for the purchase of 10 additional pet waste stations to be installed in the City of Hyattsville.
end
Summary Background:
This request is for the purchase of additional pet waste stations throughout the City. It has been noticed that there are only a few sprinkled throughout the City, and with the increase of pet owners and walkers, this is needed to ensure safety and sanitation in the community.
For example, in Ward 4 there are only a few stations on the large stretch of Nicholson Street leading to the Heurich Dog Park. Also, on the stretch of Jamestown Road, there are only two, and they are a great distance apart. I believe that these stations are needed in additional areas throughout the City as well.
The goal is not to be a supplier of pet waste bags, but to be available if there is a need and to help promote better sanitation, which will help to prevent illness in our community that may come as a result of improper disposal of animal waste.
Next Steps:
Council discussion.
Fiscal Impact:
$3,000 in FY25 Budget
City Administrator Comments:
For Council discussion. Attached to this agenda item is a map of the existing pet waste stations. There are 27 current pet waste stations. Each pet waste station costs $300. The stations can be installed using existing city resources. An allocation of $3,000 would allow the City to purchase and install 10 new pet waste stations if needed.
