Summary Background:
Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation's observance of Older Americans Month (OAM). The 2024 theme is Powered by Connection, which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. The City of Hyattsville recognizes the vital role that connectedness plays in supporting independence and aging in place by combatting isolation, loneliness, and other issues.
A cornerstone of the City's mission (executed through the City's Age-Friendly/Aging and Wellness Services Program) is to value and enhance the lives of community members through meaningful programs, services, and resources that foster inclusivity, wellness, and positive aging.
City of Hyattsville programs and services that help foster social connections and meaningful relationships among its aging and multigenerational community members include monthly educational workshops, weekly health and recreation classes, arts and digital literacy programming, intergenerational activities, biweekly Seniors on the Go! trips, a caregiver support group, information and referrals, home repairs and modifications, and free transportation service.
Hyattsville is fortunate to be home to a growing older adult population that is racially diverse, culturally rich, and integral contributors to the City's civic, economic, and social fabric. In turn, it is imperative that the City continue to support residents' desire and ability to live, work, participate, and age in place in their communities of choice for as long as possible.
