Summary Background:
In 2017 City Council approved a motion directing staff to initiate a plan to reimagine the park formerly know a Magruder Park. An RFP was solicited in October of 2017 and the contract was awarded to the Neighborhood Design Center (NDC). In 2018 NDC held multiple community sessions, conducted on-site analysis, and compiled and reviewed community input. The result of their work was two concept designs that were presented to Council on October 18th 2019. From 2020 to 2021 the City led a Council directed renaming initiative for the park formally know a Magruder Park. After extensive community outreach Council approved the rededication of the park to now be known as David C. Driskell Community Park.
The planning for the rededication of the park began in spring of 2022 with the assistance of NDC based on their prior work with City staff on the original park reimagination. With the official dedication of David C Driskell Park in October of 2022, we now need to continue the design development stage of this project. Phase 2 of the project proposal will include analysis of existing conditions, community-based workshops, and the development of park programming and landscaping.
