recommendation
I move the Mayor and Council authorize the use of American Rescue Plan Act funds in an amount not to exceed $60,000 for the purchase of electric bicycles for the Hyattsville Police Department Officers.
end
Summary Background:
The Hyattsville Police typically use bicycles to interact with the public in a more relaxed environment during events and programs and in business corridors. The department shortages require officers to travel in patrol cars for a more rapid response to emergencies with few to no officers on traditional bicycles. Electric bicycles can travel at near 30 mph and allow more officers to ride bicycles and engage with residents at events, in parks, in crowds, and in public spaces while still allowing a more rapid response when needed. Approving in April will permit the deployment of electric bicycles before summer. Legacy costs are minimal and are expected to include annual maintenance NTE $1000.
