Summary Background:
The City Council directed the City staff establish a Hyattsville Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to support public safety officials in the event of an emergency. The CERT Program trains CERT volunteers in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations to support public safety officials when needed. The CERT program offers a consistent, nationwide approach to training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disasters, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks. Our CERT members are comprised of volunteers from surrounding communities and will eventually be expanded to include other municipalities if/as requested. Our team has completed a battery of training courses which now allows them to now be certified as a Hyattsville Team.
Next Steps:
A resolution will be brought to the Council at a future meeting to officially adopt a CERT Team.
Fiscal Impact:
Approximately $5,000 will be appropriated to future budgets for training and equipment costs.
City Administrator Comments:
For presentation. Our dedicated volunteers used their own time to complete a series of training classes on weekends and evenings to be eligible for certification. We are fortunate to have them.
Community Engagement:
The Communications Department is working with the CERT Leadership Team to develop the most effective outreach strategy. Team members are also engaging in individual recruiting efforts.
Strategic Goals:
Goal 4 - Foster Excellence in all City Operations
