Summary Background:
Technological advances in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are growing rapidly, leading to both opportunities and challenges for local governments. AI technology has the potential to benefit the City in many ways including improved operational efficiencies and service delivery to residents.

Examples of the benefits of AI use for local government include:
* Reducing time spent on routine tasks such as the creation of memos or regular reports.
* Translation of text and audio into multiple languages.
* Improved decision making through the analysis of publicly available data.
* Assisting in the development of content such as emails, social media posts, and policies and procedures.

While the benefits of this technology may be significant, they do not come without risks. Risks related to the use of AI include:
* AI may create output that is inaccurate or biased.
* The use of AI may create data security risks.

It is the City's responsibility to ensure that its use of AI technology is done so in a secure, ethical, equitable, and transparent manner that aligns with the City's values. It is clear that there is a need for a thoughtful and deliberate approach to integrating AI tools in Hyattsville.

To ensure a responsible approach to the use of AI, the City will take the following initial steps.
* The City's interdepartmental IT Committee will research and draft guidelines for the use of AI. These guidelines will be presented to Council for review and adoption when complete.
* City staff will begin participating as members of the GovAI Coalition and providing training to staff members on responsible use of AI.
